Advent 2016 Devotional: December 6

Carry-ons & Commitment

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. James 1:17

screen-shot-2016-12-06-at-10-56-01-amIt was December 10th, 2014, and I’d been traveling for work for the better part of two weeks. Corporate meetings had taken their toll, and I was rather disheveled by the time I made it to Hobby Airport that night. I called Adam once I got to my car. He said he’d gotten me a surprise, so I was expecting something small but thoughtful. As I arrived home, with a suspicious smile on his face, Adam said he had my gift but wasn’t clear as to where or what it was. As I made my way into the living room, I noticed his eyes going toward the tree. Under it, a single gift, in a small ring box! Wrinkled clothes, messy hair, and with hardly any makeup left, right there on an ordinary Wednesday evening, we were engaged to be married in front of the Christmas tree!

It was the most perfect engagement in an imperfect moment. It wasn’t on a mountain top, nor was it captured by a hidden photographer. It was real, it was authentic, and it was Christmas. I worry that often times we get lost in the hustle and bustle and our own expectations and lose the ability to be present and appreciate God’s plan for us unfolding right before our eyes. While life certainly doesn’t go as planned, and inevitably neither will all of your holiday plans, remember that God is at work in our lives even on sleepy Wednesday evenings, and there’s grace and magic to be found in every moment.

Christ ’s life and Adam’s love will go down as my most cherished gifts that I hardly deserve, but I am constantly reminded, especially at Christmas, to be a joyful receiver and always be open to God’s magic in the most ordinary of days.

Dear Heavenly Father, keep us focused on you and your gifts of friends and family this advent season. Help us to be graceful when schedules and agendas don’t go as planned. Amen.

Kaci and Adam Albright were married in the sanctuary in June of 2015. She is an usher and a member of the Coordinating Committee. She and Adam also serve with the children’s ministry.
