Behold, I bring you good tidings of great JOY, which shall be to all people. Luke 2:10

A party to celebrate her marriage.

A JOY Bible verse for the occasion.

My search for a JOY verse stopped at the angel’s message to the shepherds. That’s when I realized that I had paid little attention to the words following “good tidings.” For sure, Jesus’ birth was great news. But so was the JOY that it would bring. That it was meant for everyone was part of the good news.

I have often tried to imagine exactly how the shepherds felt on that holy night. Luke does tell us that after the shepherds heard the angel’s message, they went immediately to find what the glad tidings were about. Not only did they see for themselves baby Jesus, God’s Son, and worship Him, but as they returned to their flock with JOY in their hearts, they shared the good news that the Saviour had been born.

Thinking about the angel’s words, it occurred to me the good tidings are even better for you and me today. We know not only about his birth, but about all his wonderful deeds and teachings while on earth, and then his death and resurrection. With such glad tidings, we need to follow the shepherds’ example and share the good news with everyone with whom we have contact, so that they may experience the JOY it brings.

Lovingly heavenly Father, we thank you for the glad tidings that you sent Jesus, your only Son, into our world and that He died for our sins. Help us to keep these good tidings uppermost in our minds and hearts as we celebrate your son’s birth. And help us share the glad news so that everyone can know the JOY that hearing and believing it brings. Amen.
